Most people don’t have it. The minority who own and cultivate it at home have a powerful advantage

“The right person” is a special project of “24 hours” about professional success, career growth, personal development, workplace relations, about good practices of employers, about news from the HR sector and management, about the labor market and vacancies .

You were angry with your boss because your opinion did not match his. And since he is the boss, it is clear whose opinion is authoritative. But, regardless of your position in the hierarchy, are you still wrong because you lack intellectual humility?

If someone asks you if you think you know everything about your profession, you will immediately say no. But nowadays, who knows everything and in the complex modern world, who has all the answers in any profession?! You are willing to admit it, don’t be stupid. And in theory, you’re ready to learn more and more.

Like Oprah, though in practice, accepting someone else’s opinion that differs from yours turns out to be very difficult for you. You understand that the boss or colleague is an excellent professional, but for some reason you do not want to understand his point of view, let alone accept it. Realizing that it diverges from yours, you already reject it and even hate it. Because you love the one born of your intellect.

This is extremely characteristic of the majority of people. You are they like what they put together in their chapter. They are not open to new points of view and ideas. Especially when they have made up their minds about something, they don’t want to think about whether it is not worth reviewing and reevaluating their understandings and views. They reject the other opinion as a contradiction, they do not interpret it as a challenge to their own thinking, they do not see it as an opportunity to look for a different answer, even though they are aware that they do not know all the answers. I.e. in practice, they do not experience intellectual humility and are not ready to learn, improve, develop.

Because this is the case with the majority, the minority of people capable of intellectual humility have a powerful advantage in achieving success, says Mark Leary, a professor of psychology at Duke University.

If you have this quality you can to recognize through something ordinary life.

Imagine the following situation – a colleague mentions how healthy it is in the evening, in addition to brushing, flossing. Sends you material outlining the benefits. You never did that, you say “Nonsense” and don’t bother to read.

Well, what intellectual humility, if you are unwilling to be acquainted with the evidence of something other than your habit?!

“It has to do with the desire to learn new information. People with high intellectual humility have a higher curiosity about facts, concepts, ideas. They also like to think more,” explains Prof. Leary.

People with low intellectual humility are more likely to react emotionally in their communication with those who have different views from them. They don’t pay attention to evidence that contradicts their views, they don’t gain an understanding of the position of people with whom they disagree. Thus, they fail to agree on any compromise. They are also unable to extract information and ideas from others in order to learn and develop.

“We are overconfident without reason. The evidence we rely on is based on our personal beliefs and understandings, and these are often quite fragile. We cannot always be right when we disagree with others. To be more -successful, we must realize that our approach to the world in a more intellectually modest way is both rational and useful,” recommends Prof. Leary.
