There is movement at the management level of the Berlinale: Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth wants to place the management of the film festival back in the hands of one person. This person is to be determined by a selection committee.

The Berlinale should get a new leadership. The previous dual leadership of Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek will be replaced by an intendance model, as Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) announced on Thursday in Berlin. The new director is to be appointed by a selection committee chaired by you. On Thursday, the supervisory board of the federal cultural events (KBB) reached an agreement on the future of the management level of the Berlinale.

The previous artistic director Chatrian wanted to “enter into constructive discussions with the new directorship about a future role in the new Berlinale team,” it said. It is not yet known what position he will take on.

It had already become known in March that Chatrian’s co-director Mariette Rissenbeek had not extended her contract as managing director of the festival. She will not leave her position until after the 74th Berlinale at the end of March 2024. Before Chatrian and Rissenbeek took over as dual directors, Dieter Kosslick managed the Berlinale alone.

Claudia Roth explained on Thursday: “The talks that we have had at various levels over the past few months with numerous people who work at, with or for the Berlinale have led us to the common conviction that the world’s largest public film festival in the future should again be managed and represented by one person.” According to her, the necessary decisions to modernize the Berlinale should again be in one hand to secure the future. She thanked Chatrian and Rissenbeek for their work.
