Intense Wildfires Threaten Póvoa de Lanhoso as Authorities Mobilize Emergency Response

by time news

The municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso has, as of 4:30 PM this Tuesday, three active wildfires, with the most concerning one being the fire that started on Monday on Mount São Mamede.

According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), there are currently 106 operatives on the ground, supported by 29 ground vehicles and two aerial means, across five occurrences: three active, one in resolution, and another already concluded.

In the case of the fire that started on Mount São Mamede, it has spread to other parishes and continues to burn with great intensity, which has already forced authorities to take preventive measures.

At this time, in this theater of operations, there are 66 operatives, 20 vehicles, and one aerial unit mobilized. The flames are burning close to homes, so the priority has been to protect the houses and the populations.

“We are trying to do what we can to prevent greater harm. We have been performing perimeter defenses of the homes, which are being safeguarded by the teams, thereby preventing direct combat against the fire,” explained a source from the Póvoa de Lanhoso Volunteer Firefighters.

The weather conditions are “very adverse,” with “strong winds that change direction very quickly.”
