Panel of US experts recommends intensive counseling for obese children

A panel of US experts has recommended that children with obesity should receive intensive counseling from the age of 6 in order to promote healthy eating and exercise habits. The recommendation emphasizes the need for at least 26 hours of consultation with health professionals.

The government-backed US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) initially recommended obesity screening to begin at age 6 in 2017. Since then, research has shown that intensive behavioral interventions are effective in promoting a healthy weight and improving the quality of life for children and adolescents.

The new USPSTF recommendation does not cover the use of medications or surgery and highlights the importance of behavioral interventions which include physical activity, behavior change support, and education on healthy eating.

The evidence for the intensive interventions received a grade of B from the USPSTF, indicating a high likelihood of at least a moderate benefit. According to Dr. Katrina Donahue of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, the children who participated in these interventions lost an average of 4 to 6.5 pounds, with weight loss lasting for at least a year.

Obesity in children and adolescents is a growing concern, with nearly one in five falling into the category of being obese according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends 26 or more hours of “personal, family-based, multicomponent treatment” over a period of 3 to 12 months.

The task force’s draft recommendation is open for public comment until January 16th. It is clear that addressing childhood obesity is a crucial and complex issue, and it will be important to carefully consider the most effective strategies and interventions that can support the health and well-being of children and adolescents.]
