NIJMEGEN – Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, both in men and women. The Marikenhuis will hold an interactive meeting on Thursday evening 2 March about (new) treatment options for colon cancer. The Marikenhuis is located at Slotemaker de B Ruinweg 163 in Nijmegen. Walk-in from 7 p.m., free entrance. More info and registration: www.marikenhuis.nl.

Bas Polle (gastrointestinal surgeon in the CWZ) talks about new developments in the diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer, both without and with metastases. Linda Geurts (nurse specialist in surgery at the CWZ) discusses the influence of lifestyle on the treatment of colorectal cancer. Joop Dijkstra will open the evening as an experience expert and talk about his illness process. He discusses what the Marikenhuis means for him in learning how to deal with colon cancer. Furthermore, attention is paid to what a peer support group can do for you if you have been affected by bowel cancer, the working method of peer support groups and the themes that arise therein. There will be an opportunity to ask questions, discuss and respond.

Topics that often concern people who are confronted with bowel cancer include: What is the current state of affairs and are there new insights into diagnostics and treatment options? Are there any new developments, also in combinations of different treatments? And how can this affect the prognosis? What are symptoms, causes and risk factors of colon cancer? What is the importance of the bowel cancer screening programme? What are possible consequences of treatments? As a patient, how am I well informed during examination, treatment and aftercare? What choices can you make, and what impact does treatment have on your current and future life? How does colon cancer affect intimacy and sexuality? Is colon cancer hereditary or not?
