“Experts” in interculturality have given various definitions of it. Some, trying to give prestige to their writings, include quotes from “famous” authors, mainly European. They use far-fetched expressions, unattainable by uninitiated people: the majority of the population. Interculturality has become a fashionable discourse. National and international events have been organized. The number of publications on the subject is immense.

In the end, after fussing with abstract rhetoric, the “experts” conclude that interculturality is “dialogue of knowledge”, “dialogue of cultures”. However, these definitions are incomplete. They have forgotten that interculturality is not a creed to be recited on a Saturday. She is something to be experienced.

The etymology of interculturality is very simple. It comes from two Latin words “inter” ‘between’ and cultura which is ‘to care for, cultivate’. Therefore, it means ‘living equitably between people and peoples’, since we are all cultured. But, this simple definition has an immense political consequence. Interculturality is “living together sharing Power.” This is the difficult part. In practice, neither the right nor the leaders of the “left” are willing to share power. They claim to represent the people to remain in power indefinitely.

The refusal to share power was evident when the National Directorate of Intercultural Bilingual Education was created in 1988. That people on the “right” oppose the nationalities prior to the Creole state, exercising the collective right to direct their own education, does not It is to be admired. They are colonial. But, that “left”, “decolonized”, now “21st century socialists” people oppose indigenous nationalities exercising this collective right, is illogical. The argument to oppose was and continues to be: “how ignorant people are going to educate other ignorant people.” In future installments we will discuss the meaning of sharing Power.
