International Astronomical Union returns to Italy after 100 years – Science and Technology

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 14 – More than 100 years after the first edition, held in Rome in 1922, the International Astronomical Union is preparing to return to Italy for the 33rd General Assembly. On August 15, during the closing ceremony of the current Assembly underway in Cape Town, South Africa, the Italian delegation will officially receive the baton: the event, which will be organized by the National Institute for Astrophysics, will be held in Rome from August 9 to 19, 2027 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and will be a unique opportunity for astronomers, researchers and enthusiasts from all over the world to discuss the most recent advances in astronomy, the most relevant discoveries and future challenges.
“I am deeply grateful to all my colleagues in South Africa for this handover,” said Roberto Ragazzoni, President of INAF, who is leading the Italian delegation. “And I am delighted to welcome all of you to Italy, where we will gather to promote and share the groundbreaking discoveries of the most recent astronomical research.”
With 84 member countries and over 12,000 registered members, the IAU is the world’s largest society of professional astronomers, meeting every 3 years for 2 weeks of discussions on key topics in astronomy and astrophysics. This year, Cape Town welcomed over 3,500 delegates, both in person and online, from 80 countries, for the first General Assembly held on the African continent.
“Since the first General Assembly in Rome in 1922, the IAU and Italy have enjoyed over a century of excellent collaboration at all levels,” says Willy Benz, the new incoming president: “We are excited about our new collaboration in view of the 2027 General Assembly in Rome.” The new edition will also be the occasion for many collateral events dedicated to the public, organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome and the Lazio Region: an opportunity to promote culture through astronomy.
