International Diplomats Gather in Saudi Arabia for Talks on Ending Ukraine War

by time news

Diplomats from various countries, including China, gathered in Saudi Arabia over the weekend in an effort to find a resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The talks aimed to garner support from countries that have remained neutral, further isolating Russia. Notably, China’s participation this time marked a potential step towards progress, as it signaled its willingness to attend future discussions and potentially a meeting of heads of state.

Despite diplomatic efforts, concrete results to end the conflict have been sparse since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine 18 months ago. One of the few agreements reached was brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, allowing Ukraine to transport grain across the Black Sea. However, this deal now lies in ruins, indicating Russian President Vladimir V. Putin’s determination to continue the conflict.

The failure of previous peace talks stems from both Ukraine and Russia’s focus on territorial gains on the battlefield. As the war continues, fighting is spreading to areas that were previously untouched, with Ukraine increasingly claiming credit for attacks deep within Russian lines. The use of attack drones in Moscow has become more frequent.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a 10-point plan that holds Russia responsible for war atrocities, demands the surrender of all captured Ukrainian territory, and requires the payment of potentially billions in reparations for war damages. However, the Kremlin flatly rejects these demands.

The recent gathering in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia focused on different aspects of President Zelensky’s plan. Participants agreed to establish working groups to address issues such as global food security, nuclear safety, environmental security, humanitarian aid, the release of prisoners of war, and the reunification of separated families. Bilateral meetings were held between Ukraine’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, and representatives from over 30 countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Turkey, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa.

The talks in Saudi Arabia offer a glimmer of hope for resolving the war in Ukraine, although challenges remain. It remains uncertain whether Russia will be willing to engage in meaningful dialogue, and tensions between Ukraine and the Kremlin persist. Nevertheless, the international community’s commitment to finding a peaceful solution and China’s increased involvement indicate potential progress in the quest for peace in Ukraine.
