After a significant increase in prices in Germany last year, holidaymakers benefited from a 3.1% drop in prices for flights abroad in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, the statistics office said on Tuesday.
Economy class tickets in particular were significantly cheaper, with passengers paying 15.8% less on flights to Central America, 12.3% less to Asia and Australia, and 7.4% less to less to North America, showed the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis).
On the other hand, tickets to European destinations were 2.7% more expensive and those to African destinations 4.1% more expensive. Domestic flight prices increased by 0.2%.
Overall, international flight prices have remained high since the end of COVID-related travel restrictions: they were 20.9% higher in the first six months of this year than in the same period last year, according to Destatis.
Air fares have risen or fallen in Europe and Asia, reflecting the fading of the long post-COVID travel boom and hampering airlines struggling with higher costs and limited aircraft availability.
Germany’s Lufthansa cut its profit target for the second time this year in July, grappling with cost concerns after tight wage deals and operational problems including delivery delays from Airbus and Boeing planes.
