Potato producers and importers in Honduras have agreed to import around 81 containers of certified seed from the Netherlands, with the intervention of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG). This measure has been taken to maintain production and avoid affecting the price of the local crop, according to sources from the SAG.
María Mercedes Isaula, coordinator of the SAG/Pronagro Agri-Food Chains, reported that for the period 2024-2025, imports have increased by 8 additional containers. “With the amount of certified potato seed imported, coverage will be provided for planting areas and thus the national demand for the tuber will be met,” said Isaula.
Producer Marlón Martínez said that two new producer associations have joined the import process, each with four containers, which will allow greater accessibility of potato seeds to the production sector.
Potato farming is one of the main sources of income in the highlands of Honduras. Every year, around 3,000 manzanas (2,100 hectares) of potatoes are planted by around 4,000 producers.
