International journalistic organizations sign the “Declaration of Santiago + 30”

At a significant meeting held in Santiago, Chile, international and national press organizations have ratified the “Declaration of Santiago + 30”, a document that addresses the emerging challenges facing journalism globally due to political, social and technological factors.

Signatory entities include the Inter-American Press Society (IAPA)the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)along with national media associations from nine countries in Latin America and Europe.

This event, organized by the National Press Association at the Catholic University of Chilerevisits and updates the original “Santiago Declaration” of 1994, drafted under the auspices of UNESCO with the aim of reaffirming the commitment to a free press and the development of democratic societies in Ibero-America and the Caribbean.

The new statement is presented in the context of World Press Freedom Day, with a particular focus this year on “Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis.”

The “Declaration of Santiago + 30” calls for collaboration between States, intergovernmental organizations, technology companies and media to strengthen free expression as an essential and fundamental human right for the development of informed and democratic societies.

Emphasizes the need for avoid polarizing narrativesprotect journalists, guarantee the free flow and access to information, support the sustainability of independent journalism and promote fair negotiation between media and digital platforms in the distribution of content.

Likewise, the declaration urges the intergovernmental organizations to promote policies that ensure the existence of a plural and independent press, encourage the creation of media in rural areas and promote media and digital literacy.

Technology companies are urged to make their content moderation policiescombat misinformation and respect copyright and intellectual property laws.

It is also suggested that they explore new business models and tools that provide greater sustainability to the sector.

This document will be presented on a special panel during the conferences organized by UNESCO, highlighting perspectives on how to adapt the “Declaration of Santiago” to the new challenges of time, with the participation of prominent figures from the publishing and journalistic world.
