(Agraria.pe) Around 120,000 deforestation-free coffee and cocoa producers from the 10 provinces of San Martín, as well as seven provinces of Amazonas, Cajamarca and Loreto, will benefit from the implementation of the “Deforestation-Free Value Chains in the Peruvian Amazon” Project (Folur Project) led by the Ministry of the Environment (Minam) with support from the GEF Project.

This intervention seeks to introduce sustainable coffee and cocoa production models to reduce deforestation and degradation in the northwestern Amazon of Peru. In this way, the development of local economies is encouraged, taking advantage of our natural resources in a sustainable manner. For this purpose, an investment of US$ 13,561,467 will be available.

The official launch of the project in the San Martín region will take place today in Tarapoto, an event that will bring together key actors from the public and private sectors of the region, including representatives of the regional and local government, community leaders, producer organizations, indigenous organizations, cooperation and financial institutions; who will actively participate in identifying actions and opportunities for collaboration; as well as the challenges and issues specific to the region for its implementation.

As part of the regional launch of the project, the Regional Start-up Workshop will be held in San Martín, which will represent a significant milestone for the Folur project, since it will mark the starting point for the process of implementing activities in the San Martín region and in the Alto Amazonas province of the Loreto region, points within which the scope of action of the initiative falls, which represents 73% of the intervention.

The Folur project investment will be executed until 2029, implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with the goal of improving the livelihoods of men and women who participate directly and indirectly in the coffee and cocoa production chains, and having up to 1,310,412 hectares under Integrated Landscape Management.

The event will be attended by the national director of the Folur project, Elvis García Torreblanca, the UNDP resident representative in Peru Diana Rivera Oliva, the manager of the Regional Environmental Authority of the Regional Government of San Martín Carlos Ramírez Córdova, among others.

The implementation of this sectoral initiative is part of the fulfilment of national commitments established in international environmental conventions regarding biodiversity loss, climate change, degradation, pressures on land and others. Its financing complements national policies and, at the same time, seeks to contribute to addressing environmental challenges of global relevance.
