Completing 13 years of creation, on the 20th of July – instituted by Law 12.289/2010, the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia (Unilab) is pioneering new international partnerships, towards North-South integration, with university institutions and of research in the United States of America (USA).

In this way, three students from Unilab’s undergraduate courses (Public Administration – classroom and Computer Engineering) were selected to participate in the event: Amplify Optical Immersion Program (Amplify Optics Immersion Program) – established by the Optica Foundation in partnership with founding donor Edmund Optics, which will be held from October 7 to 10, 2023, at the Greater Tacoma Convention Center Tacoma, in Washington (USA).

Students are part of the extension project Unilab Optic Chapter – associated with the North American entity “The Optical Society” (OSA), which is based on the so-called Optica – a society dedicated to promoting the generation, application, archiving and dissemination of knowledge in the area of optics and photonics throughout the world, being coordinated by the professor – PhD in Electrical Engineering – Sabi Yari Moïse Bandiri (Benin), from the Institute of Engineering and Sustainable Development (IEDS/Unilab).

About the Amplify Optical Immersion Program

It is a program designed to bring together black undergraduate and graduate students in physics and engineering, as well as offering participating students the opportunity to explore the diverse research and career opportunities in the field of optics and photonics.

Among the various activities, students will participate in the annual meeting of Frontiers in Optics (FiO) and Student Leadership, with lectures, workshops and presentations, connecting with experienced professionals through educational grants. The program is open to all OPTICA individual and corporate associate members.

“The participation of Unilab students is a unique opportunity for academic and professional growth”clarified professor and coordinator Sabi Bandiri.

Of the 50 vacancies distributed by the program to black people, individual and corporate associate members of OPTICA all over the world, three vacancies were reserved for Unilab international students: Isabel Sacabeto (Angolan) from the bachelor’s degree in Public Administration/On-Campus, Sumaé Embalo (Guinean) and Manuel Zengo (Angolan) from the Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering.

According to data from the Pro-Rectory of Undergraduate Studies (Prograd), all are studying the 8th semester of the current academic year and joined Unilab via the Selection Process for International Students (PSEI), under the management of the Pro-Rectory of Institutional and International Relations (Prointer ). Those selected, according to Prointer, will have enough course support to cover the payment of the programming (introducing research and career opportunities in optics); of airline tickets; the hosting; the registrations for Frontiers in Optics – the annual technical conference of Optics and Meals.

The coordinator of the Optica Student Chapter extension project – a program dedicated to promoting the interest and advancement of optics among Unilab students and researchers – received the news of the selection of his students with great enthusiasm due to the importance of this achievement both for the university, as well as the Massif of Baturité, in Ceará.

This achievement is extremely important for Unilab, as it strengthens our reputation as an institution of excellence in research and innovation“. He added by clarifying that the Optica Student Chapter program has played a key role in creating a vibrant community of students and researchers interested in optics, and this achievement is a reflection of the commitment and dedication of these individuals.

With relevance to the development of the region, the IEDS/Unilab professor clarified that “the importance of this conquest extends to the Massif of Baturité as a whole. By establishing the Optica Student Chapter, we are contributing to the scientific and technological development of the region. Optics is a multidisciplinary field of study with applications in many industries, from optical communication to photonics and medicine. By promoting interest and knowledge in this area, we are empowering students to become future leaders and innovators.“, Said Said. In addition to putting the Massif of Baturité (CE) on the map as a center of excellence in Optics and related sciences, through partnerships and collaborations with other renowned institutions, “we are creating opportunities for research and knowledge exchange, which drives the academic and professional growth of students involved in the program”concludes the Beninese, coordinator of the Coordination of International Projects, Cooperation and Agreements at Prointer.

About the participation of Unilab students

Professor of the Computer Engineering course (IEDS), Sabi Bandiri is confident that this achievement is just the beginning of an even more exciting and challenging journey. For him, the Optica Student Chapter will continue to inspire and enable Unilab students to become agents of change in the area of optics, contributing not only to Unilab, but also to the scientific and technological advancement of the Massif of Baturité as a whole. “Together, we are building a promising future for optics and the region“.

Among the selected students, the Angolan, Isabel Sacabetostudent of the on-site Public Administration course, Isabel Sebastião Sacabeto, explained that it was a great achievement to participate in the Amplify Optics Immersion Program. “This opportunity represents a significant milestone in my personal and academic life, both as a woman and as a Black student in the field of science. Being selected to participate in this program highlights the importance of representativeness and diversity in the academic and professional field. This achievement is not only personal, but it also inspires other women to follow their dreams, even in fields that are predominantly male and historically lacking in diversity. A The importance of all this as a student goes beyond my personal life. This achievement reinforces my determination to overcome challenges, open doors and achieve success in the academic and professional fields.“, declared Isabel Sacabeto.

For the Guinean student of the Computer Engineering course, Sumaé Embalo. The achievement of participating in the program as a black student “is of immense importance. This opportunity represents a significant milestone in my future academic and professional life, not only for myself, but also for representativeness and diversity in the field of optics.. This breaks down barriers and stereotypes, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. TI will have the chance to connect with influential practitioners and researchers in the field of optics, creating a network that can open doors to internships, research collaborations and other valuable career opportunities“.

Manuel Lucala Zengo, Angolan, also a student of the Computer Engineering course and event coordinator at the Unilab Student Chapter, explains that participating in this program is a unique opportunity. Since the program will bring together undergraduates, graduates and professionals in Physics and Engineering from all over the world, which means that “I will have the chance to make important connections with other students as well as professionals and experts in optics and photonics. And this international experience could be enriching and could help me develop intercultural skills, in addition to providing valuable professional connections in the future”.

As Manuel Zengo pointed out, participation in this international event could be an enriching and transforming experience, in addition to providing experience with a new culture, practicing the English language and broadening the perspective of the world for international students at Unilab.
