A giant outage scrambled the Orange network for several hours on Tuesday. The operator clarified in a tweet around 5 p.m. that “calls via the Orange mobile network in France” were “disturbed”, but that “mobile Internet services” were “functional”. Before indicating that everything had been back to normal since 8:30 p.m.

Zone ADSL, a platform that has a tool for reporting Internet and mobile network problems, has indeed identified 1,177 Orange antennas out of order this Tuesday, May 30. On le site Downdetectora peak of 1,482 reported incidents was reached shortly after 5 p.m.

However, Orange is the operator least prone to breakdowns, according to the 2022 report of Zone ADSL published last February. The operator even ranks far behind its main competitors. At the top of the breakdowns ranking is Free Mobile, which accounts for 36% of reports, just ahead of SFR (34%). Next come Bouygues Telecom with 18% of reports and finally Orange with 11%.

The online platform therefore lists three times fewer outages on the Orange network with just over 93,000 reports in 2022, than on that of Free, which collected nearly 289,000 complaints. In all, this outage detector, powered by 6 million users in 2022, counted no less than 800,000 reports of Internet and mobile network problems last year.

Among the departments most affected by mobile and Internet outages in 2022, according to Zone ADSL, are the North (37,305 reports), the Rhône (35,678), then the Bouches-du-Rhône (34,463). Again, the majority of reports concern Free Mobile in the North and Bouches-du-Rhône and SFR in the Rhône.

Free affected by the biggest outage in 2022

It was also Xavier Niel’s operator who deplored the biggest outage last year, accumulating 9,703 reports on the online platform on April 27, 2022, because cables had been sabotaged. A few days earlier, on April 15, 2022, Bouygues experienced a network problem reported nearly 5,300 times.

Orange’s biggest outage in 2022 generated just over 2,900 reports. By way of comparison, this Tuesday’s outage was reported more than 3,000 times, reveals Benjamin Gervais, CEO of Zone ADSL. “It was a very big breakdown, diffused throughout the territory”, he specifies.

Orange is also a good student, according to the 23rd edition of the annual survey of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (Arcep) on the quality of mobile services, published in October 2022.

In rural areas, web pages are displayed in less than 10 seconds in 90% of cases for Orange, compared to 86% for Free Mobile and 81% for Bouygues Telecom and SFR. “Orange offers the best quality of experience in intermediate and rural areas”, specifies Arcep. In dense areas, the four operators show similar and very high performances.

When it comes to downlink speed, which determines the speed of data reception for 2G/3G/4G/5G users, Orange also wins the prize, according to Arcep. Followed by SFR and Bouygues. Free, meanwhile, “closes the march”.

The French generally satisfied

Orange is dethroned by SFR and Bouygues in the ranking of call times. 2.8 seconds elapse between the transmission and reception of the call for these two operators, against 2.9 seconds for Orange. For Free, count 3.3 seconds.

According to the 2022 digital barometerthe vast majority of French people are satisfied with the quality of mobile networks: 92% satisfaction for sending and receiving messages, 91% for voice calls and 90% for Internet browsing.
