Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, the changes have not stopped. Now X announces another innovation.

The verification ticks at Twitter was once coveted – now owners of the icon can choose not to show it on their profiles instead. The platform, renamed X by owner Elon Musk, has now announced the possibility.

The meaning of the white tick icon on a blue background has changed since the tech billionaire acquired the service. It used to show that an account owner was prominent enough that Twitter cared about verifying them. Under Musk, everyone who pays a subscription fee gets the same-looking sign instead. The identity of the person is not checked. The old ticks have been removed.

After the switch, some celebrities, among others, made it a point to note that they have no intention of paying Musk’s company money for a verification tick. But Musk fans, many of them with right-wing political views, enthusiastically jumped on the bandwagon.

A few weeks ago, however, the service took a decisive step to get more users to pay: The number of posts that can be viewed per day without a subscription has been drastically reduced. After that, many who use the service professionally were simply forced to take out a subscription – and thus also got a tick symbol that they don’t necessarily care about.
