This Monday, the Secretary General of Interpol classified “transnational organized crime” as an epidemic so serious that it constitutes a “global security emergency”. Jürgen Stock explained that “organized crime is undermining societies and companies”.
This official was speaking one day before the 100th anniversary of the international organization, which is celebrated this Tuesday, and promised to present the “Vienna Declaration” to combat this crisis. Stock is expected to unveil this document later this week during Interpol’s main meeting.
To address the increase in cross-border crimes, Stock called for “more, not less, international cooperation”, pointing to the organization’s 19 global databases as a starting point.
Interpol was founded in 1923, in Vienna, at the time it was called the International Criminal Police Commission (ICPC). After the Second World War, the organization was renamed Interpol and adopted a new Constitution.
