Shweta Tripathi is one of those heroines who has always played strong roles. Be it ‘Masaan’, ‘Haramkhor’ or ‘Gaon Case’. But this cute actress of the industry transformed into the lady don Golu of ‘Mirzapur’. By the time the third season of the series came, Shweta has become quite famous. Recently, in an exclusive interview with ‘Navbharat Times’, Shweta Tripathi talked about her personal life, career journey. Also, she explained the meaning of being a strong woman.

Today, women’s sexuality is being openly discussed not only on OTT but also in films. How do you see this change?

-Till date, our desires have never been discussed. Be it our political desires, sexual desires or our desire to study. We have just been pushed around, but now this is changing and the credit for this goes to our previous generation, who have brought about this change, our writers and directors too. Like our director Gurmeet Singh has created such strong women. We have to be grateful to them. Why only them? Our husbands, like my husband Cheeta (Chaitanya) or Rasika’s (Rasika Duggal) husband Mukul (actor Mukul Chaddha). We are surrounded by men who are talented and thought-provoking as well.

Why is Shweta Tripathi being called the reason for Mirzapur 3’s flop? People said – the first such gangster in history

There are many intimate and kissing scenes of yours in this series. What is your husband Chaitanya’s take on these?

-Look, the work we are doing is very professional. I had a kissing scene in ‘Masaan’ as well. It was in my first film ‘Haramkhor’, but I know this much that if the directors I work with keep such scenes, then there is definitely an emotional graph of the character in it. There has never been an attempt to create a sensation by putting those scenes in the trailer. When cheetahs see me in such scenes in ‘Mirzapur’ or any film, they see that character, not Shweta.

Being a girl, what important decisions of your life have you been able to take?

-I wanted to come into the field of acting, so I came. Despite the fact that I did not know anyone here. Many times people advise me to do this kind of work, wear such clothes. Listening to your heart is also a big victory for a girl. You should do this, because the world and society put a storehouse of advice at your disposal. Everyone is telling you which cream you should use? At what age should you get married? Which color will suit you in the wedding? When I was not married, I was constantly asked when are you getting married? And when I got married, people started asking me why did you get married so early? So society will keep giving you its opinion, but you will have to make your own rules for yourself. I was only 6 years old when I wanted to act and I was able to fulfill my wish, so that is the biggest victory for me. I have kept that 6-year-old girl within me even today. I stay away from the game of numbers and do not hesitate to fight for the right thing.

Your series ‘Mirzapur’ has been constantly accused of glorifying violence and abuse?

-It is very easy to make allegations. Why do people only see violence or abuses in it? Every woman in our series is strong, be it CM Madhuri, Bina Bhabhi or Zarina. Does anyone talk about mental health, which is there in it? The series has many layers. There are many issues. Yes, violence is a part of it, because that is the world of Mirzapur.

Have you ever had to lose a role because of your physicality?

-Once I lost a role because of my age. I never hid my age. I got a role and my director sat in front of me and told me how I fit into the character he had thought of. Then he asked me what is your age? I told him my real age. At that time he did not say anything, but the next day I came to know that I am not a part of his project. He thought I was very young, but when he came to know my real age, he rejected me.

When they found out my real age, they rejected me. I lost a role because of my age.

The role of Golu in Mirzapur is full of vengeance, violence and cruelty. Was your personal life affected while playing this complex character?

-Yes, it happened in season 2 and then after season 3 too. I always catch the emotional tone of my character. My character of Golu was like a rasgulla in the first season, but by the third season she was filled with vengeance. I did a lot to get into the character of Golu. Then there came a time when I felt that I was not able to handle it, Golu was having too much effect on me, then I had to meet a therapist. My therapist told me that you do so much to get into the character, but what do you do to get out of it? I have a playlist of Golu, I have his perfume. I even started dressing like Golu in my daily life. I am very fond of colors, jewelry, but I realized that I had stopped all that and I did not even realize it. But getting into the soul of this character definitely benefited me so much that I got a lot of love from the audience. Today, things like Golu’s hairstyle, his way of talking are becoming very popular. Today, he has also joined the Bhaukaal of Mirzapur like Kaleen Bhaiya and Guddu. Now people are calling me Golu King.
