Renowned Bollywood writer-lyricist Prasoon Joshi is in the news these days for his mega musical play ‘Rajadhiraj: Love, Life, Leela’ based on the life of Shri Krishna, which is being performed daily at NMACC, Mumbai till September 1. When asked about the reason for agreeing to write ‘Rajadhiraj: Love, Life, Leela’, Prasoon Joshi says, ‘Whenever I write a project, be it ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ or ‘Taare Zameen Par’, I try to do something new every time, so that I can also learn something myself.’ Prasoon Joshi further said, ‘Being from Uttarakhand, spirituality is in our blood. I knew about Lord Shri Krishna, but I did not think that I would get the opportunity to write on him. Therefore, when the producer duo of this play Dhanraj Nathwani and Bhoomi Nathwani, who are themselves great Krishna devotees, called me, I felt that it was a message from God. Explore it.’

What challenges did you face while writing ‘Rajadhiraj’?
Prasoon explains the challenges of writing ‘Rajadhiraj’, ‘Since the form of Shri Krishna is so huge, it was a challenge to decide which part of him to keep, but when I started reading about him, talking to scholars, I realized that you see Krishna in the form you want to see him. Braj wanted to see the child form, so they saw naughty Lala, Radha wanted to see the love form, so they saw Raas Rachaiya, Dwapar wanted a guide, so they saw Rajadhiraj, so when I started writing, I kept writing from childhood onwards in a holistic form. The good thing was that I have written both this play and its songs, so wherever I felt the story was long, I used to write a song there.’

Prasoon Joshi saw Krishna in this form
When asked how Prasun saw Krishna, he said, ‘I saw him in a philosophical form. To be honest, this project gave me a lot. I felt as if Krishna was holding my finger and showing me the path of life that whatever work God gives you, you should fulfill that responsibility.’
