CashyOS is a Linux distribution from Germany, which distinguishes itself positively from the mass of free operating systems as a variant of Arch Linux with its numerous very interesting and promising approaches, and could particularly appeal to many gamers. Chief developer Peter Jung, who initiated this ambitious project, focuses on “speed and security” with CashyOS and relies on many optimizations ranging from the kernel to the CPU scheduler, as well as package management and customized software packages.
CashyOS is already optimized out of the box
A particular feature of CashyOS is the numerous and far-reaching optimizations that the operating system comes with right out of the box. In addition to specially compiled software packages that are supported by modern instruction sets for x86-64-v3 and x86-64-v4, as well as Zen 4 and Zen 5, and the so-called Link Time Optimizations (“LTO”) which ensure fewer system calls and thus more efficiency, the central operating system kernel is also in focus. But that’s not all…
- CashyOS compiles its software packages with x86-64-v3 and x86-64-v4
- CashyOS uses the modern instruction sets from Zen 4 and Zen 5 wherever possible
- CashyOS relies on LTO (“Link Time Optimizations”) for greater efficiency
- CashyOS optimizes core packages with PGO (“Profile-Guided Optimization”)
- CashyOS supports BOLT (“Binary Optimization and Layout Tool”)
- CashyOS uses its own optimized Linux kernel
- CashyOS utilizes an optimized CPU scheduler
…in addition to the optimized and adjusted CPU scheduler using BORE (“Burst-Oriented Response Enhancer”), CFS (“Completely Fair Scheduler”) and EEVDF (“Earliest Eligible Virtual Deadline First”) are also available for selection. All these measures aim to result in an “incredibly fast” operating system.
When it comes to desktop environments, users have a wealth of choices, and in addition to well-known environments like the latest KDE Plasma 6.1.4 and Gnome 46.3, as well as Cinnamon 6.2.9, there are also smaller desktops and window managers, as well as the first alpha of the new Cosmic desktop from System76. CashyOS has chosen the current Plasma Desktop as its standard desktop.
Alongside the numerous work environments, different themes are also already available out of the box, giving the free operating system a uniform and consistent appearance. CashyOS looks very modern but not at all overloaded, and the icons, buttons, and menus are cohesive.
The release notes of the latest release, the so-called August 2024 Release of CashyOS, clearly highlight the somewhat experimental and particularly performance-oriented nature of the Linux distribution. The development team now also relies by default on the new graphics driver for GeForce graphics cards, the Linux x64 560.31 Beta, which offers support for VRR (“Variable Refresh Rate”) under Wayland.
CashyOS in detail
Specifically for gamers, CashyOS – typical for an Arch derivative – offers a very up-to-date platform based on the following components:
Base and lineage
Work environment and desktop
- KDE Plasma 6.1.4
- KDE Frameworks 6.4.0
- KDE Gear 24.05.1
Operating system kernel
Graphics stack
- Mesa 3D 24.2.0
- Nvidia Linux x64 560.31 Beta
The latest system image (.ISO) from CashyOS, which is only a few hours old, is approximately 2.4 GiB in size and is available for download on the project’s German server, among others. The YouTube channel Mattscreative provides the corresponding impressions and presents the many advantages of CashyOS in detail.
