To celebrate the season of Cheongomabi, Namyangju City’s representative festivals are held throughout the region.
Namyangju City (Mayor Joo Gwang-deok) announced on the 6th that it will hold the ‘Gwangneung Forest Festival’ and ‘Dasan Herbal Medicine Festival’ utilizing the region’s symbolic cultural resources this fall.
Both festivals representing the city have been recognized for their excellence by being selected as representative festivals of Gyeonggi Province for two consecutive years.
The ’19th Gwangneung Forest Festival’ will be held for two days on the 28th and 29th in the Gwangneung Forest area of Jinjeop-eup, and the ’38th Dasan Jeong Yak-yong Cultural Festival’ will be held from the 11th to the 12th of next month in the Jeong Yak-yong Historic Site area in Joan-myeon.
First, the ‘Gwangneung Forest Festival’, which started as a citizen-led event and is now in its 19th year, is the only festival in the country where Gwangneung Forest is open to the public only during the festival period.
Gwangneung Forest is a forest with such high environmental value that it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and is called an ‘ecosystem treasure trove’ as it has been preserved without development for 550 years.
Normally, public access is strictly prohibited and the area is managed to preserve the ecological environment, but once a year, during a festival, the forest is opened to the public to promote the meaning and value of Gwangneung Forest.
This festival consists of various unique programs such as △Gwangneung Forest Walking (6km forest trail walk), △Gwangneung Forest Manjijak (play experience), and △Gwangneung Forest Star Cafe (coffee & eco-friendly experience).
This year in particular, a circular bus will be operated to alleviate inconveniences to citizens due to traffic and parking. The opening ceremony will be held at the Knaksae Stadium (Bupyeong-ri, Jinjeop-eup), and the convenience of visitors will be improved by dispersing the vehicles entering.
In addition, promotional activities are being prepared through collaboration with Starbucks Korea, an ESG eco-friendly management company, so the satisfaction of citizens participating in the festival is expected to increase even more.
The city will also hold the ’38th Dasan Jeong Yak-yong Cultural Festival’ from the 11th to the 12th of next month in Joan-myeon, where the birthplace of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong is located.
The Jeong Yak-yong Cultural Festival, which has been held since 1986 to inherit the thoughts and spirit of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, will offer a variety of things to see, such as a literary contest, Goyuje (flower offering and tea ceremony), Yeoyudang fruit shop, and other programs that allow a glimpse into tradition, as well as Challenge! Top winner exam, and science play experiences.
This year’s Jeong Yak-yong Cultural Festival will also introduce a circular bus to increase convenience for citizens, running buses from Ungilsan Station to the festival site.
City officials said, “As this is a representative event of Namyangju-si, we are putting all our efforts into preparations,” and added, “We ask for the interest and participation of many citizens in Namyangju-si’s representative festival that will fill up autumn.”
