Madurai Train Fire: Investigation Continues as Officials Inspect Burnt Coach

Madurai, India – The investigation into the recent train fire incident in Madurai has entered its second day as officials conduct a thorough inspection of the burnt coach. The incident occurred on August 26 when a fire broke out in a train coach that arrived on the Madurai-Punaluar Express train. It was reported that the fire started when some individuals attempted to heat tea and coffee using a gas cylinder, leading to the death of nine passengers and injuries to eight others.

Yesterday, the railway police and a team of forensic experts conducted an examination of the burnt coach, seizing exploded gas cylinders, stove parts, and cooking utensils believed to have contributed to the accident. During the search of the train’s seats and roof, authorities also discovered burnt currency notes with denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 200 in the passengers’ compartments.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru Railway Safety Commissioner, Chowdhury, conducted an inquiry with seven injured passengers who are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital. Additionally, the railway security forces apprehended five individuals who fled the scene during the accident. Two cooks among them were subjected to separate investigations by the Commissioner.

Numerous members of the public participated in a hearing chaired by Commissioner Chaudhary, providing crucial information about the accident. Speaking to the media, the Commissioner stated, “An investigation into the Madurai train fire incident is ongoing, and a report will be submitted upon its completion. The appropriate actions against those found carrying prohibited items will be determined once the investigation concludes. Arrests will be made, and we will ensure the speedy and proper handling of the individuals involved.”

Commissioner Chaudhary also mentioned plans to tighten regulations to prevent similar accidents in tourist and passenger coaches, asserting that there was no conspiracy behind the incident. The inspection was attended by officials, including Madurai Divisional Manager Ananth.

In related developments, 33 survivors of the train fire were airlifted to Delhi yesterday. Twenty-eight passengers were flown from Madurai Airport to Delhi via an IndiGo flight at 2:30 pm, while five others were transported from Madurai to Bengaluru and then to Delhi. The travel arrangements were meticulously arranged by officials from the Madurai Division of the Southern Railway.

Furthermore, the bodies of the nine tourists who lost their lives in the train fire were transported from Madurai to Chennai by ambulance, after which they were flown to Lucknow. Eight bodies were sent directly to Lucknow from Chennai airport, while four bodies were sent via Bengaluru. Fourteen individuals with minor injuries were also flown to Lucknow, accompanied by four police officers.

As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to uncover the cause of the fire and ensure that necessary measures are implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
