‘Io Capitano’ by Matteo Garrone is the Italian candidate for the 2024 Oscars

‘I Captain’, the latest film by Matteo Garrone, presented at the Venice Film Festival, is the Italian candidate for the Oscars. The film will therefore represent Italy at the 96th edition of the Academy Awards, in the selection for the International Feature Film Award category, with the following motivation: “For having embodied with great power and cinematographic mastery the universal desire to seek freedom and happiness. Creating an epic dream that stages the courage and pain that have always marked migrations, in a dimension of profound humanity”.

‘Io Capitano’ will compete for the shortlist which will include the fifteen best international films selected by the Academy and which will be announced on 21 December 2023. The announcement of the nominations (the five films nominated to compete for the award) is scheduled for 23 January 2024, while the Oscar award ceremony will be held in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024.

The Selection Committee for the Italian film to be nominated for the Oscars established by Anica, on behalf of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, is composed of Alessandro Araimo, Domizia De Rosa, Esmeralda Calabria, Daniela Ciancio, Francesca Lo Schiavo, Giorgio Moroder, Crisiana Paternò, Michele Placido, Paola Randi, Riccardo Tozzi, Gianpiero Tulelli.

“We are very proud to be able to represent Italy at the Academy Awards with ‘Io Capitano’ and we hope that Seydou’s journey will also touch the hearts of the American public”, declared the director.
