‘Golf queen’ Inbee Park, who is running for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission election, is starting full-scale election campaigning.

Inbee Park is expected to begin her IOC Athletes’ Commission election campaign around the 18th, when the ‘2024 Paris Olympics’ athletes’ village officially opens.

Inbee Park is a Korean golf legend who won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and has won a total of 21 times on the LPGA Tour. She also achieved the ‘Golden Career Grand Slam’ by winning all four major tournaments and an Olympic gold medal.

In August last year, Inbee Park was selected as a candidate for the IOC Athletes’ Commission recommended by the Korea Sports Council, beating out Yeon-Kyung Kim (volleyball), Jong-Oh Jin (shooting), Dae-Hoon Lee (taekwondo), and So-Young Kim (badminton). In November, her name was included on the final list of candidates.

There have been two Korean IOC Athletes’ Commission members. Moon Dae-sung (Taekwondo) was the first to be elected at the 2008 Beijing Games, and Ryu Seung-min, the current IOC Athletes’ Commission member and president of the Korea Table Tennis Association, was elected at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Only one IOC Athletes’ Commission member can be appointed per country, and the term is eight years. With Chairman Yoo ending his term after the Paris Olympics, Inbee Park is now able to throw down the gauntlet.

The IOC Athletes’ Commission, which represents the voice of athletes in the IOC, receives the same treatment as general IOC members. Currently, Lee Ki-heung, President of the Korean Sports Association, Kim Jae-yeol, President of the International Skating Union, and Chairman Yoo are serving as IOC members.

The new IOC Athletes’ Commission members will be elected by voting by participating athletes from the opening day of the Paris Olympic Village until the closing of voting booths.

Candidates for the Athletes’ Committee can campaign in person or promote themselves through social media. Athletes can vote at designated polling places, such as the Athletes’ Village or the stadium.

Among the 32 finalists, the top four vote-getters from different sports will become new IOC Athletes’ Commission members. The four winners will be announced during the Paris Olympics.
