Regarding the incident in which the South Korean team was incorrectly introduced as “North Korea” at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach called President Yoon Seok-yeol on the 27th and personally apologized.
The Blue House reported in a written briefing that President Yoon spoke on the phone with Chairman Bach for approximately 10 minutes starting at 8:05 p.m. that day.
Chairman Bach told President Yoon that “something inexcusable has happened” and that he “offers my sincere and deepest apologies.”
In response, President Yoon expressed regret to Chairman Bach, saying, “As a country that has hosted the Summer and Winter Olympics and the World Cup, the people of the Republic of Korea were very surprised and embarrassed by this incident.”
He then said, “I apologize for this incident through various media and SNS, and ask that it not happen again.”
President Bach responded, “I fully understand your concerns and will do everything I can to ensure that something like this never happens again.”
President Yoon also said, “I hope that the remaining Olympic schedule will proceed successfully and become a true global festival.”
Earlier, at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony held early this morning, Korean time, an absurd incident occurred in which the stadium announcer introduced Korea’s country name as North Korea. When the ship carrying the Korean team entered, the stadium announcer introduced Korea in French as ‘Republique populaire democratique de Coree’, and then in English as ‘Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’. Both refer to North Korea.
