President Thomas Bach speaks at the opening ceremony of the 142nd IOC Session
“The collapse and threat of the new world order makes the original mission more important”
At the opening ceremony of the 142nd IOC Session held in Paris on the evening of the 22nd (local time), International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said, “In a time when the world order is divided and divisions are deepening, the Olympic values of independence, equality, and human dignity have become more important than ever.”
According to foreign media outlets such as AP and AFP, Chairman Bach said in his speech that day, “We are witnessing the formation of a new world order.”
He pointed out that we are currently in a time of historical division, where the global economy is out of sync and the gap between rich and poor and the selfish pursuit of profit are breaking down law and principle, which is upending international relations that have been united since World War II and putting pluralism in a corner.
“In this new world order, words like ‘cooperation’ and ‘compromise’ have sadly become words of disparagement,” said President Bach.
“This trend is directly contradictory to our mission of unity and is a truly painful situation. We must prepare to face this change by rediscovering our Olympic values and becoming more united,” he added.
President Bach said that despite these difficult challenges, the Olympic Committee has maintained a positive spirit.
“We are fully prepared (for such a situation) because we pursue global values, not just pluralism. The Olympic movement is a global movement. In the Olympic movement, we are all equal,” he emphasized.
“Our Olympic Committee includes 206 national (or regional) Olympic committees, all of which have equal rights under the Olympic Charter. Furthermore, we live in solidarity with each committee. These are the core values that define our Olympic community,” he said.
The 142nd Olympic Committee will be held in Paris, France from July 22 to July 24 and on August 10.
