International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach will not seek reelection for another term. He told journalists about this, İdman.biz reports, citing TASS.
It was previously reported that a decision to amend the Olympic Charter to expand Bach’s powers as IOC President was not made at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris. At the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, several members of the organization came forward with an initiative to change the Olympic Charter so that Bach could be re-elected for another term. The election of the IOC President will be held in March 2025 at the organization’s session in Greece.
“I very much appreciate all your comments and arguments. As a result of deep reflection and extensive discussions, including with my family present here in the hall, I have come to the conclusion that my mandate should not be extended beyond the period provided for in the Olympic Charter,” Bach said.
Bach, 70, was elected IOC president for an eight-year term in 2013 and was re-elected for a four-year term in 2021.
As an athlete, Bach became the Olympic champion in team foil fencing in 1976. He is also a world champion (1977), silver (1973) and two-time bronze (1979, 1981) medalist in world championships.
