iOS 27 Release Date: Compatible iPhones and How to Prepare for the Update

Apple will officially release iOS 27 to the general public on Monday, September 14, bringing a major performance-focused update, new Siri AI features, and interface refinements to compatible iPhones. Users can prepare by making room for the install, updating apps, and backing up data.

Release Date and Device Compatibility for iOS 27

Apple has announced that iOS 27 will officially roll out to the general public on Monday, Sept. 14. Every iPhone that can run iOS 26 is compatible with iOS 27, spanning models from the iPhone 11 lineup up to the latest releases, alongside the third-generation iPhone SE and newer, as well as the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro series.

On the iPad side, iPadOS 27 arrives on the same date but carries stricter hardware requirements. Supported models include the iPad Pro 11-inch second generation and newer, iPad Pro 12.9-inch fourth generation and newer, iPad Air fourth generation and newer, iPad ninth generation and newer, and iPad mini sixth generation and newer. Older devices like the first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro and third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro are no longer supported.

How to Clear Storage and Back Up Before Installing

Because iOS 27 is a substantial system upgrade, users need to ensure sufficient space is available on their devices. It is recommended to aim to have at least 30GB free to prevent any download or installation errors. Users can inspect their storage breakdown by navigating to Settings, tapping General, and selecting Storage, where unused applications, outdated media, and old files can be offloaded.

Before initiating the download, safeguarding personal data is essential. It is emphasized that users should make sure that your iPhone is backed up.

Pre-Update Indexing and App Upgrades

In addition to system preparation, app compatibility requires attention. It is advised to visit the App Store, tapping the user profile, and checking the Updates section to install all available app updates so that third-party software runs smoothly on the new operating system.

Major New Features Arriving in iOS 27

Beyond performance enhancements, iOS 27 introduces significant upgrades across core apps and system controls. ZDNet highlights a new drawing tool in the Messages app powered by Apple Markup, a large widget option that occupies nearly the entire home screen tab, and a Dual Capture mode for FaceTime that records videos from the rear and front cameras simultaneously.

TechRadar, drawing on months of developer beta usage, notes that the Photos app gains a Reframe tool backed by generative AI to adjust perspectives, while the Shortcuts app now permits shortcut creation using natural language descriptions. Furthermore, users can finally set an alarm volume independent of the main ringtone volume. Interface design also sees tweaks, with Apple providing a slider in Settings under Appearance and Liquid Glass to tone down the transparency effect, alongside refinements delivering more uniform refraction and improved contrast and app icons that are sharper and more detailed.

Siri AI Upgrades and Hardware Limitations

The centerpiece of the software update is the overhauled assistant, rebranded as Siri AI.

However, hardware stratification applies. TechRadar points out that while every device running iOS 26 can upgrade, advanced Siri AI capabilities requiring higher processing power—such as altering the assistant’s pace and expressivity—are restricted to newer models with more powerful chipsets. Users ready to make the jump can trigger the installation manually once live by opening Settings, tapping General, and selecting Software Update.
