iPhone 15 Introduces Battery Charge Limiting Feature

The highly anticipated iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have been released, and they bring with them a significant change – the replacement of the Lightning port with a USB-C port. This means that users can now use the same cable to recharge their iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, there is another hidden feature that Apple did not announce.

According to information found by 9to5Mac, the iPhone 15 will include an option to limit the maximum battery charge. This new feature, discovered in the code of iOS 17 RC released to developers, allows users to better preserve the health of their iPhone’s battery. Once available, the option can be found in the Battery settings menu.

When the feature is turned off, users will be notified that the iPhone will charge to its full capacity. However, when the feature is enabled, the user will be informed that the battery will only charge to a certain percentage, denoted as X%. The Settings app will also display the last recharge level set by the user.

This battery charge limiting feature is similar to the “Optimized Battery Charging” feature already available on some Android phones, such as Samsung’s Galaxy. Recharging a lithium-ion battery to 100% accelerates battery aging, so phone manufacturers have been introducing features to limit recharging in certain situations. By sacrificing battery life, users can ensure that the battery will last longer.

The introduction of this feature may have been prompted by complaints from iPhone 14 Pro users about the rapid decline in their device’s maximum battery capacity. Apple seems to be providing users with better control over their iPhone’s battery management.

While the iPhone 15 has not yet hit stores, it can be assumed that this battery charge optimization feature will be available on the new model. Based on the code found, it is not enabled on iPhone 14 models. There is a possibility that this feature will only be compatible with USB-C iPhones.

iOS 17 will be released to the public on Monday, September 18, and pre-orders for the iPhone 15 will begin this Friday, with the official launch scheduled for September 22. Apple users can look forward to improved battery management with the introduction of this new feature.
