Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable “iPhone Ultra” in early September 2026. These flagship models will reportedly feature a new A20 Pro chip and a smaller Dynamic Island, though buyers face potential price increases.
The upcoming launch represents a shift in Apple’s release strategy. While the Pro models and the foldable Ultra are slated for a September debut, the regular iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air are rumored to arrive later, likely around March 2027.
A20 Pro Chip and the Shift to 2nm Architecture
The core of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is the new A20 Pro chipset. Moving from the 3nm process used in the A19 Pro, the A20 Pro will utilize TSMC’s first-generation 2nm process. This architectural leap is expected to deliver solid year-over-year performance and power efficiency gains.
This hardware upgrade isn’t just about speed. The 2nm process is intended to support more powerful on-device capabilities. To manage the thermal demands of this more powerful chip, Apple may implement an improved vapour chamber cooling system.

While the physical dimensions remain consistent—6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max—the screen real estate is becoming more usable. Apple is reportedly shrinking the Dynamic Island. This is achieved by moving Face ID’s flood illuminator under the screen.
The display technology is also evolving with the introduction of so-called LTPO+ display technology, which should contribute to longer battery life.
Variable Aperture and Battery Capacity Increases
The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera is receiving an upgrade. The Pro models are rumored to feature a variable aperture. This allows users to control the amount of light that passes through the camera’s lens and reaches the sensor, providing greater control over depth of field.
Power capacity is also trending upward, particularly for the largest model. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to have nearly a 10% larger battery compared to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with some estimates pointing to a 5,500mAh capacity.
The Cost of AI: Expected Price Hikes
The combination of 2nm chip production and a global shortage of AI-driven memory—sometimes referred to as RAMageddon
—is driving up manufacturing costs. Outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook has already signaled that Price increases are unavoidable,

These costs are expected to hit consumers directly. In Australia, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could cost AU$200 to AU$400 more than the current generation. Globally, price increases may range from US$100 to US$300 depending on the model.
