Apple’s newly launched iPhone Duo features a 48MP main camera with striking similarities to the entry-level iPhone 17e, raising questions about hardware choices in a foldable device starting at $1,999 or ₹2,99,900 in India ahead of its late October release. Apple has officially expanded its hardware lineup with its first foldable iPhone, a radical design departure that arrives alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12, and AirPods 5 launched at the Apple Event 2026. Yet a close examination of the device’s technical specifications reveals a surprising hardware overlap with Apple’s much cheaper models, drawing scrutiny from buyers and analysts examining the high-end tier.
Camera Specifications and the iPhone 17e Connection
According to Apple’s published tech specs, the iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India and $1,999 globally, positioning it among the most expensive mainstream smartphones the company has ever sold. Pre-orders open on October 16 ahead of an October 23 release date. Despite that premium pricing, the main camera follows a formula remarkably close to the iPhone 17e rather than Apple’s Pro lineup. The iPhone Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India for the 256GB model.
Both the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 17e utilize a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 26mm focal length, an f/1.6 aperture, and Hybrid Focus Pixels, which can capture 24MP and 48MP high-resolution photographs. Both devices rely on this primary sensor to deliver a 12MP 2x optical-quality telephoto mode, omitting a dedicated telephoto lens entirely. However, the match is not absolute. Apple’s documentation pairs the Duo’s main sensor with sensor-shift optical image stabilization, whereas the 17e lists plain optical image stabilization with no “sensor-shiftqualifier. That sensor-shift detail instead lines up with the standard iPhone 17's tech specs page, which pairs sensor-shift OIS with
100% Focus Pixels,” the wording the iPhone 18 Pro’s tech specs page also uses but the Duo and 17e do not. This suggests that the Main camera of the iPhone Duo realistically falls somewhere between the iPhone 17e and iPhone 17.
How the Duo Compares to the iPhone 18 Pro Max
The camera compromises become starker when stacking the foldable against Apple’s top-tier traditional flagship. The iPhone 18 Pro Max features a 48MP Fusion Main camera equipped with a variable aperture, second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, and 100% Focus Pixels. It also includes a dedicated 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera capable of a 100mm 4x optical zoom and a 12MP optical-quality 8x telephoto option (with digital photo zoom up to 40x).
By contrast, the iPhone Duo’s rear camera system consists solely of two 48MP cameras: the main camera and an Ultra Wide camera. It lacks both a variable aperture and a long-range dedicated telephoto lens, capping its zoom capabilities with up to 10x digital zoom. Additionally, the Apple First Foldable iPhone has no Face ID and no SIM card slot.
Engineering Choices and Market Expectations
Apple has not publicly confirmed whether the Duo physically takes the exact same camera sensor from the iPhone 17e and puts it inside the Duo. Whether the cameras are exactly the same or not is debatable, as Apple can use different generations, sensor implementations, coatings, or image-processing pipelines while keeping broadly similar specifications. Yet the matching Focus Pixels wording and specifications have fueled extensive online discussion and speculation online about component sharing in a device priced near the ₹3 lakh mark.
