IPL 2022 | Kovid spread concern; BCCI prepares to host IPL outside India

by time news
The rising number of Kovid cases in the country is a crisis for the IPL. The BCCI was all set to host the season in India with 10 teams, including two from Ahmedabad and one from Lucknow. The board was hoping to reap huge financial benefits by hosting the tournament in the country after a while. However, with the rise of Kovid in the country, the BCCI is planning to shift the IPL 2022 from India to South Africa or Sri Lanka.

The BCCI has already stated that it wants to host the tournament in India but will consider hosting the tournament outside India if there is no other option. Hence the indication that this is a route in the ‘Plan B’ being prepared by the BCCI. Earlier, it was reported that the tournament could be shifted to Maharashtra due to the rising number of Kovid cases. However, the daily surge in Kovid cases has prompted the BCCI to hold the tournament outside India.

According to BCCI sources, the BCCI is planning to hold the next season in South Africa, Indian Express reported. The BCCI is considering South Africa to host the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as it is fully satisfied with the warm-up prepared by South African cricket for the Indian team currently touring South Africa. With the arrival of two new teams, IPL 2022 will be the longest season in the history of the IPL. Along with South Africa, Sri Lanka is also under consideration by the BCCI.

Despite hosting the second quarter of last season and the 2020 IPL in the UAE, the BCCI is now looking for a new venue. “The board cannot rely on the UAE all the time, so the board is looking for new possibilities. The time difference in South Africa will also be something that players can adapt to.” The Indian Express reported quoting BCCI sources.

According to the report, the Indian Cricket Board is pleased with the arrangements in South Africa for the Test series.

“The team’s accommodation for the second Test was spread over acres. The BCCI official said:

Earlier, it was decided to hold the IPL exclusively in Maharashtra at four venues: Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai, Wankhede Stadium, DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium. However, the BCCI was forced to renew the IPL 2022 schedule after the Ranji Trophy was postponed due to increasing Kovid cases and the domestic Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy was canceled.

Meanwhile, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has recently said that the cricket board will make every effort to ensure that the upcoming season of the IPL takes place in India. Shukla added that after examining the Kovid situation in the country in March, he would consider shifting the tournament from India to India only.
