Bengaluru: Former India and Chennai Super Kings batsman Ambati Rayudu says that MS Dhoni can hand over the captaincy to someone else in the middle overs during the IPL. Rayudu, who had bid goodbye to all formats of cricket last year, said in Star Sports programme, ‘Through the Impact Player rule, Dhoni can hand over the captaincy to someone else in the middle overs. This year could be a change for CSK. If this is his last year, if he plays for a few more years then he will be the captain. I would like him to remain the captain.

What does the new role mean?

Dhoni had recently hinted in a Facebook post that he would be playing a new role in the IPL this year. Chennai Super Kings had handed over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022, but after consecutive defeats, he left the captaincy midway and Dhoni again became the captain, since then Dhoni is the captain and he led CSK to the fifth title in 2023.

Shardul desperate to meet Dhoni
On the other hand, Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur, after recently winning the Ranji Trophy title with Mumbai, is hoping to perform well for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL under the leadership of Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the previous phase was not so good for them. Shardul was a part of the CSK team from 2018 to 2021, after which he played for Delhi Capitals in 2022 and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2023. This season he will again return to CSK for which he was bought for Rs 4 crore. Last season, he could take only seven wickets in 11 IPL matches and was able to score runs with the bat at an average of 14.13. Apart from Shardul Thakur, CSK will also include young Sameer Rizvi, New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and Rachin Ravindra in this season.
