Jaipur: When the final list of players to be retained in the IPL was released, many were surprised that the Rajasthan Royals paid Rs 14 crore to retain Malayalee player Sanju Samson. They retained Sanju, who captained the team last season, as Rajasthan’s first player.

Apart from Sanju, the Rajasthan Royals have retained England superstar Jos Buttler and youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal. Many were surprised by Rajasthan’s move to retain Sanju for more than Butler. Rajasthan retained Sanju as the first player to join the team amid rumors that he would leave Rajasthan.

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lankan batting legend and director of cricket in Rajasthan, said that the Rajasthan Royals did not have to worry too much about keeping Sanju Samson. Sangakkara said that Rajasthan sees Sanju as a long-term captain and as a captain he did not have to think much about retaining Sanju.

Sanju is an extraordinary player. “He continues to prove that he is a great asset to the team with his excellent performances each season,” Sangakkara said. Sangakkara said that the young star has retained the successful Jaiswal as the future superstar.

The whole world recognizes what a player like Jose Butler can do. Butler can bat in both the top order and the middle order. Sangakkara said it was “disappointing” not to be able to retain Ben Stokes and Joffre Archer.
