Tehran remains a participant in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program and intends to seek its resumption. This was stated by the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic Ali Bagheri Kani, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“We have an agreement that was concluded in 2015, <...> The US withdrew from it, which damaged the agreements. We are still participating in the JCPOA. The US has not yet been able to return to [соблюдению] JCPOA, so the goal we are pursuing is to revive the 2015 document. We are not trying to [заключения] new agreement,” he said in an interview with CNN, the text of which was published on the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry. This is how the diplomat responded to a question about the progress of consultations on the nuclear deal and the possibility of moving to new agreements to replace the JCPOA.

On July 16, in an interview with Newsweek magazine, Bagheri Kani said Washington must take the next step to improve bilateral relations and renew the nuclear deal.

The JCPOA was signed by the permanent five of the UN Security Council and Germany with Iran in 2015 to overcome the crisis surrounding its nuclear developments. In 2018, US President Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the agreement. Current US leader Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled his readiness to return Washington to the nuclear deal. Russia, Great Britain, Germany, China, the US and France have been negotiating with the Iranian side in Vienna since April 2021 to restore the JCPOA in its original form. After several rounds, the talks ended without result in November 2022.
