Iran and Armenia mutually cancel border duties for trucks

Yerevan and Tehran will mutually cancel the fees charged to trucks when crossing the state border.

The Armenian service of Radio Liberty – Azatutyun writes that information about this political agreement was provided by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia. Mr. Sanosyanand the Minister of Roads and Urban Development of Iran Mehrdad Bazrpaşwas given during the meeting.

Sanosyan explained that according to this agreement, border duty will not be collected from Armenian trucks going to third countries using the territory of Iran as transit. The same rule will be applied to Iranian trucks using the territory of Armenia as transit.

The Iranian minister emphasized that the new rule will be beneficial for both sides, because the goods carried by the trucks will be delivered to the consumer at a cheaper price.

Azatutyun writes that it is not yet known when this agreement will be implemented. For this, approval of the new rule at the legislative act level is required.

Fees

According to the information, Iranian trucks crossing the border of Armenia currently pay a road tax of around $250, in addition to environmental and state fees.

The agreement reached between the two countries refers to these payments.

Before that, Armenia made certain tax concessions for Iranian trucks.

In 2018, the Armenian government exempted Iranian vehicles from road tax that unloaded their cargo in the Megri tax area.

However, three years later, the Armenian government canceled these concessions.

Azatutyun writes that 10-15 percent of cars from Iran are unloaded in Meghri. However, trucks going from Iran to other regions of Armenia had to pay a fee of 250 dollars.
