On the day of the party for the qualification for Qatar 2022, the fans in the stands were reviewed as Fifa wants, but this time they were selected

Big party in Tehran for the qualification to Qatar 2022 of Iran, victorious 1-0 against Iraq (Taremi’s goal was decisive in the 48th minute, Thursday 27 January). It will be the sixth participation in a World Cup, the third in a row after Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. As well as being the first national team in the Asian area to have already removed the pass for the tournament. But it is not these things that make Thursday 27 January go down in history. In fact, the presence of women at the stadium was memorable. Almost two thousand of the approximately 12 thousand entrances allowed in the Azadi plant. They were selected, separated from men, but they were there.

Throughout the country, women have been banned from stadiums since the early 1980s, by the Iranian Islamic Revolution. Even if, to tell the truth, the competitions of the national team had already had a derogation in the past. The first dates back to three years ago, in 2019: on that occasion it was an obligation requested by FIFA, the highest world body which, among other things, should also fight against all types of discrimination. It was October 2019, challenge to Cambodia, qualifying a Qatar 2022. It was to be the beginning of a new slow, but epochal new era. Instead, Covid arrived, the pandemic brought the world to its knees and a big problem was lifted from the government of Tehran. An excuse to avoid any kind of question about it. Now we start again, but it was another request from the upper floors of the ball that allowed this reopening. It wasn’t easy. A few days ago there would have been no limits to the entrances, but as the game approached the government reduced the capacity due to the Covid. And when the go-ahead for the sale of tickets was given on the official website, those in the sector dedicated to women never activated. Indeed, it seemed that we had to decide again to play behind closed doors. Then yet another turnaround. Stadium open to almost 12 thousand people and almost two thousand women present, even if by invitation only: happy faces, flags in the wind and a lot of joy for Taremi’s goal at the beginning of the second half. Right against the rivals of Iraq, which allows the national team of coach Dragan Skocic to qualify. I wonder if it will really be the beginning of a new revolution.
