Iranian authorities are privately calling on the Lebanese Shiite organization Hezbollah and other armed groups not to provoke the United States in order to avoid further escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, The Washington Post reported this with reference to Lebanese and Iraqi officials.
“Iran is doing everything possible to prevent the war from expanding and escalating to the point of no return,” an Iraqi official told the newspaper on condition of anonymity.
The Iranian authorities, according to the publication, publicly warned that the republic’s military personnel are ready to respond to any threat, but “privately, senior leaders call for caution.” Thus, Iranian officials in Lebanon, at a meeting with Hezbollah members in February, said that they “do not want to give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a reason to start a larger war in Lebanon or anywhere else.” In Iraq, according to sources, Iranian representatives said that the resumption of conflict in the region “could undermine the pace of negotiations on the withdrawal of American troops from the country.”
“Iran may have realized that its interests [в регионе] will be violated if he allows his supporters to attack U.S. and coalition forces without limit,” one U.S. official told the newspaper.
On February 9, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Iran will continue to provide strong support to Lebanon and Islamic resistance forces in the region. According to him, Hezbollah armed forces, in coordination with the Lebanese army and government, are capable of defending Lebanon. He added that Israel will not be able to fight a war on two fronts – in the Gaza Strip and in southern Lebanon, therefore, if Netanyahu decides on any new adventure, it will be the end of his political career.
He also noted that the winners in the current conflict in the Middle East will be the resistance forces and the Palestinian people, while the warmongers will be defeated. The head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry called the United States the main culprit for the aggravation of the situation in the region.
