/ The Iranian judiciary’s Mizan News Agency reported that the authorities executed today, Tuesday, a man accused of killing a police officer and injuring 5 others, after he ran them over with a car during a protest movement that swept the country in 2022.

The death of a young Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, in police custody in September 2022, sparked months of anti-government protests in the biggest show of opposition to the authorities in years. She had been arrested on charges of violating the country’s Islamic dress code.

“After the Supreme Court’s approval, the death sentence against the accused, Mohammad Qabadlou, was carried out early this morning,” the agency said.

In addition to the death sentence for murder, Qabadlu was also sentenced to death for “corruption on earth.”

For its part, Amnesty International said that Qabadlou’s right to a fair trial was “violated” and that the Iranian judicial system “did not take into account his bipolar disorder.”

“Qabadlu was sentenced to death twice after grossly unfair sham trials, with torture-tainted ‘confessions’ and no thorough mental health assessments ordered, despite his mental health problems,” the organization said.

The agency said the allegations of mental illness were “untrue” because the accused denied them during his trial.
