“The execution of Jamshid Sharmahd by the Iranian regime is a scandal that I condemn in the strongest terms,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a message on the social network that he could defend himself against the charges brought against him during the trial.

Earlier, the German Foreign Minister condemned Tehran’s “inhumane regime” after the execution of the German dissident of Iranian origin. “The murder of Jamshid Sharmahd shows once again what kind of inhumane regime prevails in Tehran: a regime that uses death against its youth, its own population and foreign nationals,” said Annalena Baerbock, adding that Berlin had repeatedly expressed “that the execution of German nationals would have serious consequences”.

Kidnapping in Dubai

Iran announced in August 2020 the arrest of the dissident who was then living in the United States, during a “complex operation”, without specifying where, how or when he was arrested. According to his family, he was abducted by Iranian security services while in transit in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and forcibly returned to Iran.

Jamshid Sharmahd was born in Tehran and immigrated to Germany in the 1980s and has lived in the United States since 2003. He was particularly distinguished by hostile statements against the Islamic Republic on satellite channels in Persia. Jamshid Sharmahd was also accused of leading the Tondar group, known as a “terrorist” organization in Iran. The group Tondar (“Thunder” in Persian), also known as the Monarchist Society of Iran, claims that they want to overthrow the Islamic Republic.

Iranian justice also accused Jamshid Sharmahd of establishing contacts with “officials of the FBI and the CIA” and of “attempting to contact Israeli Mossad agents”.

In recent years, Iran has executed a number of dual nationals. This is the case in May 2023 regarding the Iranian-Swedish dissident Habib Chaab. Sentenced to death for “terrorism”, he was convicted of leading an Arab separatist group. Habib Chaab left in October 2020 after going to Istanbul (Türkiye). He arrived a month later in prison in Iran. Last year, Tehran caused a wave of international anger by executing a former defense official, Iranian-British Alireza Akbari, convicted of espionage.
