Tel Aviv: Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz claimed on Friday that he expects international partners such as the United Kingdom and France to join Israel in responding to a possible Iranian attack. He even said that these countries will not only support Israel’s defense, but will also join in attacking important Iranian targets. France rejects Israel’s claim
However, both France and Britain have underestimated Israel’s chances. Britain has even stressed the need to break the system of retaliatory attacks in the Middle East. French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné said at a press conference in Jerusalem that while diplomatic talks are underway, it would be “inappropriate” to talk about “preparations for retaliation or Israeli retaliation”. When asked about Katz’s statement, a British Foreign Office spokesperson stressed that the UK is working closely with its allies to reduce tensions. He said they urge all parties to refrain from continuing the current destructive cycle of retaliatory violence. “We call on Iran and its allies to refrain from attacks that would further escalate regional tensions and jeopardise the chance to agree on a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Escalating tensions in the Middle East serves no purpose, no country or nation,” the spokesperson said.
America warned Iran
A source familiar with the meeting of the Israeli, French and British foreign ministers said the three ministers did not discuss joining the coalition for any attack on Iran. A senior US Biden administration official also warned in a stern tone on Friday that if Tehran decided to attack Israel and escalate the conflict in the Middle East, it could have “devastating” consequences and “particularly for Iran.” The official said the US has encouraged Iran through mediators not to attack as there is a “way forward” to achieve a ceasefire and hostage agreement.
