The younger Khamenei has maintained a low public profile since succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the opening phase of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran on February 28. Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in the exact same strike that killed his predecessor and has not made a single public appearance since assuming the country’s highest leadership position.

The supreme leader’s absence from public view, including his notable absence from his father’s funeral ceremonies last month, has fueled international speculation regarding his health and his relationships with senior Iranian officials. Instead of appearing in person, the younger Khamenei has communicated primarily through written statements.
