Iran has expressed its readiness to return to negotiations with world powers next month on the renewal of the nuclear deal. “We agree to start negotiations by the end of November,” the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of the Islamic Republic Ali Bagheri wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday, October 27, after meeting with the mediators of the European Union in Brussels.

Bagheri, who is also Tehran’s chief negotiator, said the exact date for the resumption of talks will be announced within next week.

The EU and the world powers are struggling to get the nuclear deal with Iran back on track in Vienna.

The White House is skeptical

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the administration of US President Joe Biden is aware of Bagheri’s statement, but she is awaiting confirmation from European officials that Iran is indeed ready to return to the negotiating table.

“I would leave it to the negotiators to decide when the next round of talks will take place,” Psaki was quoted as saying by AP.

US special envoy to Iran Robert Malley this week spoke of “serious and growing concern” by the Biden administration over Iran’s refusal to set a date for the resumption of talks in Vienna.

Nuclear deal with Iran

The Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA), which was signed in 2015 by Iran, the United States, Russia, China, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, provided for Tehran to take a number of steps to limit its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions previously imposed by the United States and the EU.

After the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in May 2018, Tehran refused to fulfill part of its obligations under the JCPOA. Washington responded by tightening restrictive measures against Tehran and sending warships and bombers to the Middle East region.

In April, negotiations began in Vienna to return to compliance with the terms of the JCPOA. However, they have reached an impasse after a hardliner with the West, Ebrahim Rais, was elected president of Iran.
