At least one person has died from the effects of the dengue virus in Iran since March 21, 2024. This was reported in a report by the infectious disease response center of the Ministry of Health of the Islamic Republic, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

According to him, a total of 152 cases of dengue fever have been registered in the country since March. With the exception of one person, all of those infected are Iranian citizens, of whom 130 had traveled to the United Arab Emirates shortly before testing positive for the infection, 7 to Pakistan, and 12 had not left the Islamic Republic.

According to the agency, mosquitoes that carry the disease, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, are widespread in the southern Iranian provinces of Bushehr, Sistan and Baluchestan, Fars and Hormozgan and in the northern provinces of Ardabil, Gilan and Mazandaran.

On July 22, the World Health Organization (WHO) assessed the risk of further spread of dengue fever in Iran as high.

The dengue virus is one of the flaviviruses, which also includes the causative agent of Zika fever, tick-borne encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever and other dangerous diseases. This pathogen is widespread in the tropical and equatorial regions of Eurasia, Africa and America, where it is carried by mosquitoes of the Aedes aegypti species.

According to the WHO, up to 400 million people are infected with dengue fever every year, and there is no treatment or vaccine for this viral disease yet.
