Iranian Oil Minister Javad Owji revealed details about the gas pipeline planned to be built to import gas from Russia.
According to the Iranian Mehr News Agency, Oji stressed that “the process of building the pipeline, which transports natural gas from Russia to Iran, was an important and unprecedented development in Tehran’s history,” adding: “The value of the contract with Russia for the gas pipeline will range between 10 and 12 billion dollars annually.”
He pointed out that “23 gas processing plants currently produce 850 million cubic meters of sweet gas per day, and the new gas transportation project will provide a large possibility of importing gas from Russia,” noting that “Russia, with the technology of building a gas pipeline on the seabed, has agreed to pay the cost of implementing the project.”
He added, “The implementation of the new pipeline will ensure the sustainable delivery of local gas on the one hand, and will increase the capacity and continuity of gas exports on the other hand.”
He pointed out that “this 30-year contract could be the culmination of the energy diplomacy approach of the late Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi, which, in addition to eliminating the imbalance in domestic natural gas, will turn Iran into a natural gas hub in the region, with significant implications for economic, political and trade relations.”
It is noteworthy that “Iran and Russia possess 60% of the world’s gas reserves, and in late June, the National Iranian Gas Company and the Russian company “Gazprom” signed a memorandum of understanding to transfer gas from Russia to Iran.”
