Iran’s mission to the United Nations said that “the timing and manner of Iran’s response to the assassination of former Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh will be carefully planned to ensure that it occurs at a moment of maximum surprise.”

The mission added: “Our response must be calculated to avoid any negative impact on the potential ceasefire in Gaza.”

The Iranian mission added: “When their eyes are fixed on the radar screens, they will be surprised from the ground and perhaps from the sky as well,” continuing: “Any response must punish Israel and deter any future attacks in the country.”

The mission stressed the “need to punish the aggressor for his terrorist act and violation of Iranian national sovereignty.”

The spokesman for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Naeini, said yesterday that “Tehran has never let any attack on it pass without a response,” noting that the response to the assassination of the former head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, will come at the appropriate time.

“We have not let any attack on Iranian targets go unanswered, and the enemy must await calculated and precise strikes at the right time,” Naeini said in statements to Iranian state television, adding that “responding to Haniyeh’s assassination may take a long time, and time is on our side.”

Earlier, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the killing of the head of the political bureau of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, and one of his companions, as a result of a bombing that targeted their residence in the capital, Tehran.
