Britain’s outgoing senior army officer, General Patrick Sanders, has warned of a grave risk of global conflict escalating into World War III within five years. He insists Britain and NATO must recognise the danger and take action to prevent catastrophic consequences. Sanders stresses that the alliance has until the end of the decade to significantly rearm and prevent a potential Russian attack.
The Times writes about this.
In his speech, Sanders called Russia, China and Iran “the new Axis powers,” arguing that they pose an even more deadly threat than Nazi Germany and its allies in 1939. He believes that these states are more interconnected and coordinated than the original Axis powers, making their actions even more dangerous. According to the general, war with Russia and its allies is inevitable unless Britain and NATO take significant steps to modernize and strengthen their armed forces.
Sanders believes Britain has five to 10 years to prepare for a potential threat from Russia, which is currently rebuilding after gruelling battles. He insists Britain must address gaps in its defences and modernise its armed forces to be ready for future challenges.
The general noted that the British armed forces are currently not powerful enough to repeat operations like the invasion of southern Iraq in 2003 or the seizure of the Falkland Islands in 1982. He also stressed the need to improve the protection of underwater infrastructure and strengthen air defenses, which, in his opinion, currently have significant gaps.
Sanders also stressed the importance of ensuring protection against long-range precision missiles, which pose a serious threat to the country’s security. He noted that the UK must invest heavily in protecting its airspace and undersea cables to prevent potential sabotage by Russia.
In conclusion, General Sanders issued a stark warning about the need for urgent action to modernise and strengthen the UK and NATO’s defence capabilities to be prepared for potential threats from Russia, China and Iran.
