Iran says US has set new terms for nuclear deal

by time news

The new nuclear deal proposals voiced by the United States have no rationale, says Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. He did not specify what proposals he was talking about. He discussed this topic by telephone with the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell.

The Iranian minister said that the US authorities cannot put forward new conditions “under the pretext of public pressure.” “The advancement of new demands by the United States has no logical justification, and this contradicts the country’s position to reach an agreement as soon as possible,” said Mr. Abdollahian, quoted by the press service of the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

The minister stressed that Iran “is also facing problems of public pressure.” According to Hossein Amir Abdollahian, the issue of lifting sanctions against Iran “should not depend on excessive demands from the United States.”

In 2015, Iran signed a Joint Comprehensive Nuclear Action Plan (JCPOA) with the G6 (USA, Russia, China, UK, Germany, France). It provided for the phased lifting of economic sanctions against Tehran in exchange for the curtailment of its nuclear program and the admission of IAEA experts to the relevant facilities for control. In 2018, the US withdrew from the program and reimposed sanctions. Because of this, Tehran began to gradually abandon the JCPOA.

From 27 to 30 December 2021, the eighth round of negotiations on the JCPOA was held in Vienna, after which the participants took a break. In March, Iran and the IAEA agreed on technical cooperation.
