The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy has seized a tanker carrying smuggled oil in the Persian Gulf.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to Interfax, Iranian media reported on Monday.

“The vessel was in the northern Persian Gulf near the Arash oil field and was loading contraband fuel from Iranian barges when it was detained on orders from judicial authorities,” the IRGC said in a statement.

It is noted that the operation took place on Friday, but its results were reported only on Monday. The detained vessel Pearl G was sailing under the flag of Togo. The owner of the tanker is an Iraqi citizen living in the UAE.

According to preliminary estimates, the vessel was carrying at least 700,000 liters of contraband oil. The incident is currently under investigation, and the tanker and nine crew members of Indian origin have been sent to an Iranian port.

Last week, Middle Eastern media reported the detention of another Togolese tanker in the Persian Gulf, which was also carrying contraband fuel, but in the amount of 1.5 million liters.
