/ An Iranian court issued a five-year prison sentence against Safaa Aeli, the uncle of the young Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who died in mid-September 2022, after being arrested in Tehran on charges of improperly wearing the hijab.

The court charged Aali with several charges, including expressing anti-government views during the 2022 protests that swept the country in protest of the killing of young woman Mahsa Amini.

The Norwegian organization Hungaro reported that a family was sentenced to five years and four months in prison by the Revolutionary Court in his hometown of Saqqez in the northwest of the country.

The Hrana rights website quoted Aali’s lawyer, Saleh Nikbakht, as saying that part of the sentence was suspended, and Aali will have to serve three years and six months in prison. The charges against him include participating in protests that violate internal security, spreading anti-government propaganda, and insulting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died at the age of 22 on September 16, 2022, three days after being arrested by the morality police in Tehran for not adhering to strict dress codes. Her death sparked widespread protests, with participants raising the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.”
