LLast week, the United States seized the Iranian tanker Suez Rajan as part of a sanctions enforcement operation.

The Marshall Islands-flagged 150,000-ton tanker Suez Rajan was carrying Iranian oil to China when it was seized by the Americans near the Strait of Malacca, all the oil on board confiscated by Washington. The tanker was forced to go to the United States to compensate the families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks (what is the logic?).

Iran immediately reciprocated the US actions without problems. The Iranian navy reacted by capturing a tanker in the Gulf of Oman under the flag of the same Marshall Islands – Sweet Advantage, which was carrying Kuwaiti oil to Houston, US and was chartered by the Chevron oil company.

A similar situation arose in May a year ago when the Americans attempted to confiscate a shipment of Iranian oil in Greek waters. The Iranians responded by detaining two Greek tankers in the Persian Gulf. The Supreme Court of Greece decided to return the oil to Iran, after which the Iranians released the Greek tankers.

Iranians competently show how this game can be played together. Both are Suezmax class tankers, so we can say that the exchange turned out to be the same.

The US has arrested a number of Iranian tankers in recent years for allegedly violating US sanctions, including recent interventions against vessels bound for heavily sanctioned Syria.
